The Eames aluminium group series was originally intended for outdoor seating, designed in 1958, the Eames Aluminum Group has been a popular choice for workplaces all over the world ever since.
Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard were designing a home in Columbus, Indiana. For industrialist J. Irwin Miller. They wanted a high-quality and stylish seating solution for outdoor use and asked Charles and Ray Eames to assist in designing one.
Charles and Ray Eames designed the chair using aluminum and a seat frame meant to support a synthetic mesh that would endure the elements. The design was a major design accomplishment and represented a step forward from the concept of the chair as a solid shell. Eameses added to the original mesh design by adding soft and stuffed cushions, they named these ‘soft pad chairs’. The designs included lounge versions, office or ‘task’ versions an even executive high back versions that can be found as a set with a matching ottoman.
The Aluminum Group series manufactured by Herman Miller began in 1958. They have been in continuous production but have seen many changes over the year. The original mesh design intended for outdoor use was discontinued and many material options such as leather, naugahyde vinyl and now a new type of mesh have been introduced and replaced throughout the years.
