Harry Bertoia for Knoll - Vintage Fiberglass Molded Side Chairs Set of 3 - Black
What is it?
Another from our 'other designers' section. Eames and Harry Bertoia working on multiple designs together and you can see striking similarities with the wire chair designs attributed to both designers. These chairs here were designed in 1952 by Harry Bertoia the 'Bertoia Side Chair' is usually found made from metal or 'wire'. “If you look at the chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture, space passes through them.” Bertoia once said. A very unique design that was way ahead of it's time and has been in production ever since. Bertoia began to experiment with the design using different materials and in 1960 Knoll manufactured the same design shape but using molded fiberglass, much like the Eames shell chair designs around that time. These were called 'The Bertoia Molded Shell Chair' and produced between 1960 to 1972.
What's special about this one?
This set of 3 is in good vintage condition and come complete with the original fabric covers and 2 of them still retain the original Knoll labels and stickers. The fabric is worn but still in good condition and the fiberglass has no cracks or chips, there are some marks a scratches here and there as you would expect with painted fiberglass but there are no signs of restoration. The metal bases too seem to be all original with no welds or signs of repair, a lovely trio of vintage chairs!
